If you have a Wii or Nintendo DS, and you play Mario Kart Wii, Animal Crossing: Wild World, etc. online, you're not going to be able to do that anymore.
They will shut it down in a few months. Nintendo considers them legacy systems. Even though the Wii is the Nintendo console that everyone has (not many people bought the Wii U), and a lot of people prefer DSi over the 3D gimmick of 3DS. I know the Wii is a seven year old system, but that's the one Nintendo product that people have in their homes.
I think people who haven't read this news will think to themselves "I can't play this game online, that's the last time I buy Nintendo". It's certainly the last time for me buying Nintendo stuff. The last shred of credibility they had with me is now gone.
I'm not going to buy a Wii U, when I already have a Wii, no way. There hasn't been a good game released for Wii U except "Donkey Kong Country: Tropical Freeze" and "Pikmin 3", and it's been out for a year and a half. The hardware of Nintendo's new machine is substandard, even for late 2012. A tri-core CPU clocked at 1.24 GHz, 2 GB workable memory, and Radeon's retarded little brother for the GPU, means the Wii U has shittier hardware than the PC my parents bought four years ago. Then they had they audacity at E3 to claim it could compete with the PlayStation 4 and Xbox One, with the help of their overpriced "Wii U GamePad". Also promoting their products at home furnishing stores and not at game stores, in hopes of attracting a casual crowd isn't working, the stereotypical clean-cut families they market after already have a Wii sitting next to their television set. Meanwhile, Nintendo fans can drop dead as far as Nintendo is concerned.
Where I see Nintendo going in a few years is discontinuing their hardware division, and having their games available on PlayStation Store. In which case I will probably buy a few of their titles again.
